Root Canal Therapy
The aim of root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) or root filling is performed to save a badly damaged or infected tooth when the nerve in the middle of it has become infected or is causing pain, instead of removing it.
A tooth can die for a number of reasons:
- tooth decay
- deep filling
- trauma
- tooth fracture
- tooth or gum infection
A root canal enables your tooth to be saved by replacing the irritated nerve tissue in the root of the tooth with a filling.
Root canal therapy is done over a few visits and is a ‘painless’ procedure.
Common Symptoms
A full evaluation will be necessary to determine the proper course of treatment, but a few common symptoms point to the need for root canal treatment.
- Inflammation
- Pressure
- Pain and sensitivity
- Discoloured tooth
- A small lesion on gum tissue
- Bitter taste
